 RABINDRANATH TAGORE 

Rabindranath Tagore was a great poet, philosopher, painter, humanist and patriot. He was born on 7 May 1861 at Jorasanko in Kolkata. From his childhood, he began to write. He belonged to a rich family. He did not like school education. So he was educated at home by private tutors. Tagore was sent to England for higher studies. He established Shantiniketan at Bolpur which is known as Visva Bharati University. He wrote a number of poems, short stories, dramas, novels and essays etc. Rabindranath won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his famous book-Song Offering (Gitanjali) in 1913. He returned 'Knighthood' to the British Government for the inhuman massacre in Jallianwalabagh. This great man passed away in 1941 in Kolkata but still today we remember his name.

 রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ছিলেন একজন মহান কবি, দার্শনিক, চিত্রকর, মানবতাবাদী ও দেশপ্রেমিক। তিনি ১৮৬১ সালের ৭ মে কলকাতার জোড়াসাঁকোতে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। ছোটবেলা থেকেই লেখালেখি শুরু করেন। তিনি ধনী পরিবারের সদস্য ছিলেন। স্কুলে পড়ালেখা পছন্দ করতেন না। তাই তিনি বাড়িতেই প্রাইভেট টিউটরদের কাছে শিক্ষা লাভ করেন। ঠাকুরকে উচ্চশিক্ষার জন্য ইংল্যান্ডে পাঠানো হয়। তিনি বোলপুরে শান্তিনিকেতন প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন যা বিশ্বভারতী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় নামে পরিচিত। তিনি বেশ কিছু কবিতা, ছোটগল্প, নাটক, উপন্যাস ও প্রবন্ধ লিখেছেন। রবীন্দ্রনাথ ১৯১৩ সালে তাঁর বিখ্যাত বই-গান অফার (গীতাঞ্জলি) এর জন্য সাহিত্যে নোবেল পুরস্কার লাভ করেন। জালিয়ানওয়ালাবাগের অমানবিক গণহত্যার জন্য তিনি ব্রিটিশ সরকারের কাছে 'নাইটহুড' উপাধি ত্যাগ করেন । এই মহান ব্যক্তি ১৯৪১ সালে কলকাতায় চলে গেলেও আজও আমরা তাঁর নাম স্মরণ করি।

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA

Swami Vivekananda was born at Simla in North Kolkata on 12 January 1863. His early names were 'Bile' and 'Narendranath'. He was restless and spirited from his boyhood. He passed the Entrance Examination from the Metropolitan Institution. He did his degree from the Scottish Church College. He had a mighty mind. At that time he met Sri Ramakrishna who named him Vivekananda. The meeting brought about change in him. Vivekananda became a monk and travelled all over India on foot. His speech at the world's Religious conference in Chicago was a remarkable one. He founded the Ramakrishna Mission and Math at Belur in May 1889. He was a selfless patriot, lover of man and a man of letters. His works inspired the Indian youth. Such a great son of India passes away only at the age of 39, on July 4, 1902.

স্বামী বিবেকানন্দ ১৮৬৩ সালের ১২ জানুয়ারি উত্তর কলকাতার সিমলায় জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তাঁর প্রাথমিক নাম ছিল 'বিলে' এবং 'নরেন্দ্রনাথ'। ছেলেবেলা থেকেই তিনি ছিলেন অস্থির ও উদ্যমী। তিনি মেট্রোপলিটন ইনস্টিটিউশন থেকে প্রবেশিকা পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ হন। তিনি স্কটিশ চার্চ কলেজ থেকে ডিগ্রী করেন। তার ছিল শক্তিশালী মন। সেই সময় তিনি শ্রী রামকৃষ্ণের সাথে দেখা করেন যিনি তাঁর নাম রেখেছিলেন বিবেকানন্দ। এই বৈঠক তার মধ্যে পরিবর্তন আনে। বিবেকানন্দ একজন সন্ন্যাসী হন এবং পায়ে হেঁটে সারা ভারত ভ্রমণ করেন। শিকাগোতে বিশ্ব ধর্ম সম্মেলনে তাঁর ভাষণটি ছিল অসাধারণ। তিনি ১৮৮৯ সালের মে মাসে বেলুড়ে রামকৃষ্ণ মিশন ও মঠ প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। তিনি একজন নিঃস্বার্থ দেশপ্রেমিক, মানুষ প্রেমিক এবং একজন চিঠির মানুষ ছিলেন। তাঁর কাজগুলি ভারতীয় তরুণদের অনুপ্রাণিত করেছিল। ভারতের এমন এক মহান সন্তান মাত্র ৩৯ বছর বয়সে ৪ জুলাই, ১৯০২ সালে শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেন।

SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the great patriot, was born in Cuttack on 23rd January 1897. Janakinath Bose was his father and Prabhabati Devi was his mother. He was a good student. He stood second in the Matriculation Examination. He also passed the I.C.S Examination. But he did not serve under the British Government. He joined India's freedom movement and became a great leader. Later he left India and formed the I.N.A. in Singapore. Everybody called him 'Netaji'. His death is still a mystery.

মহান দেশপ্রেমিক নেতাজি সুভাষ চন্দ্র বসু ১৮৯৭ সালের ২৩শে জানুয়ারি কটকে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। জানকীনাথ বসু ছিলেন তাঁর পিতা এবং প্রভাতী দেবী তাঁর মা। তিনি একজন ভালো ছাত্র ছিলেন। সে ম্যাট্রিকুলেশন পরীক্ষায় দ্বিতীয় হন। তিনি I.C.S পরীক্ষাও পাশ করেন। কিন্তু সে ব্রিটিশ সরকারের অধীনে চাকরি করেননি। তিনি ভারতের স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলনে যোগ দেন এবং হয়ে ওঠেন একজন মহান নেতা। পরে তিনি ভারত ছেড়ে I.N.A গঠন করেন সিঙ্গাপুরে। সবাই তাকে ডাকত 'নেতাজি' বলে । তার মৃত্যুর  খবর এখনও রহস্যময়।

MY BEST FRIEND

study in the same class in Adarsho Boys' School. Salim is a Muslim boy. He has been my best friend since Nursery. He is my neighbour. Salim and I go to school together. He sits beside me in class. We share our lunch and play together in school and at home. Salim is very fond of cricket. He is a very good bowler and takes at least two or three wickets in each innings. I like to bat when he bowls, but I get out very quickly. When Salim needs help in Maths, I help him. When I need some help in Grammar he is always ready to help me. I have yet to find a better friend than Salim. I pray for him every night when I go to sleep.

আদর্শ বয়েজ স্কুলে একই ক্লাসে আমারা লেখা-পড়া করি । সেলিম একজন মুসলিম ছেলে। নার্সারি থেকে সে আমার সবচেয়ে ভালো বন্ধু। সে আমার প্রতিবেশী। সেলিম আর আমি একসাথে স্কুলে যাই। সে ক্লাসে আমার পাশে বসে। আমরা আমাদের দুপুরের খাবার ভাগ করে নিই এবং স্কুলে এবং বাড়িতে একসাথে খেলি। সেলিম ক্রিকেট খুব পছন্দ করেন। সে খুব ভালো বোলার এবং প্রতিটি ইনিংসে অন্তত দুই বা তিনটি উইকেট নেয়। সে যখন বোলিং করে তখন আমি ব্যাট করতে পছন্দ করি, কিন্তু আমি খুব দ্রুত আউট হয়ে যাই। সেলিমের যখন গণিত বিষয়ে সাহায্যের প্রয়োজন হয়, আমি তাকে সাহায্য করি। ব্যাকরণে আমার কিছু সাহায্যের প্রয়োজন হলে তিনি আমাকে সাহায্য করতে প্রস্তুত থাকেন। সেলিমের চেয়ে ভালো বন্ধু এখনো পাইনি। আমি প্রতি রাতে যখন ঘুমাতে যাই তার জন্য প্রার্থনা করি।

MY SCHOOL

I study in Sophia Convent. This is a girls' school. We have Irish nuns teaching us. Sophia Convent is a small school with about seven hundred students. It has three buildings, a small nursery class, a chapel and a big playground. There is a beautiful garden between the chapel and the nursery class. In one of the buildings, there is a big hall where we have our assembly and prayers. At one end of this hall is a small stage where we have cultural shows. Next to the hall is the dining room where we all have our lunch. Our school timings are from 7.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. with a half-an-hour break for lunch. The
whole school has games in the first period. We have a white and red checked skirt, white shirt, red tie, and white socks with black shoes as our uniform. I can proudly say that our school is one of the best in India.

আমি সোফিয়া কনভেন্ট স্কুলে পড়ি। এটা মেয়েদের স্কুল। আমাদের কাছে আইরিশ নানরা আমাদের শিক্ষা দিচ্ছেন। সোফিয়া কনভেন্ট একটি ছোট স্কুল যেখানে প্রায় সাত শতাধিক শিক্ষার্থী রয়েছে। এটিতে তিনটি ভবন, একটি ছোট নার্সারি ক্লাস, একটি চ্যাপেল এবং একটি বড় খেলার মাঠ রয়েছে। চ্যাপেল এবং নার্সারি ক্লাসের মধ্যে একটি সুন্দর বাগান রয়েছে। একটি ভবনে, একটি বড় হল যেখানে আমাদের সমাবেশ এবং প্রার্থনা হয়। এই হলের এক প্রান্তে একটি ছোট মঞ্চ যেখানে আমাদের সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান হয়। হলের পাশেই ডাইনিং রুম যেখানে আমরা সবাই আমাদের দুপুরের খাবার খাই। আমাদের স্কুলের সময় সকাল 7.30 টা থেকে 3.30 টা পর্যন্ত। মধ্যাহ্নভোজের জন্য আধা ঘন্টা বিরতি সহ। পুরো স্কুলে প্রথম পিরিয়ডের খেলা রয়েছে। আমাদের ইউনিফর্ম হিসাবে একটি সাদা এবং লাল চেক করা স্কার্ট, সাদা শার্ট, লাল টাই এবং কালো জুতার সাথে সাদা মোজা রয়েছে। আমি গর্ব করে বলতে পারি যে আমাদের স্কুলটি ভারতের অন্যতম সেরা।

MY FAVOURITE FLOWER

I am very fond of flowers, and I love gardens too. My favourite flower is the lotus. My garden has a little pond which is full of lotus flowers. There are different kinds of lotus, but the most common ones are the Indian lotus, the Egyptian lotus and the Chinese lotus. The pink ones are seen most often. The white lotus is found only in some places. The purple lotus is very rare and looks really beautiful. The lotus has beautiful, long petals. It has a long stem and broad, large leaves which rest on the water.
In India, the lotus is a sacred flower. It is used for worship in temples. It is the national flower of India.

আমি ফুল খুব পছন্দ করি, এবং আমি বাগানও ভালবাসি। আমার প্রিয় ফুল পদ্ম। আমার বাগানে একটা ছোট্ট পুকুর আছে যেটা পদ্ম ফুলে ভরা। বিভিন্ন ধরণের পদ্ম রয়েছে, তবে সবচেয়ে সাধারণ হল ভারতীয় পদ্ম, মিশরীয় পদ্ম এবং চীনা পদ্ম। গোলাপী রঙগুলি প্রায়শই দেখা যায়। সাদা পদ্ম শুধুমাত্র কিছু জায়গায় পাওয়া যায়। বেগুনি পদ্ম খুবই বিরল এবং দেখতে সত্যিই সুন্দর। পদ্মের সুন্দর, লম্বা পাপড়ি আছে। এটির একটি দীর্ঘ কান্ড এবং চওড়া, বড় পাতা রয়েছে যা জলের উপর বিশ্রাম নেয়। ভারতে পদ্ম একটি পবিত্র ফুল। এটি মন্দিরে পূজার জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয়। এটি ভারতের জাতীয় ফুল।

MY FAVOURITE BOOK

'Harry, the Dirty Dog' is my favourite book. I never get tired of reading it. Harry is a white dog with black spots. He likes everything except taking a bath. So one day, he hides his bath brush in the back garden and runs away from home. He plays in the mud and gets dirtier. He goes to the coal pit and rolls in it. In the evening he returns home as he is hungry. No one recognises him. He tries to make them understand that he is Harry. He does all his old tricks like dancing, standing on two feet, and rolling over and over. But still, no one recognises him. He feels very sad. Suddenly he remembers his bath brush. He runs to the back garden, picks up the bath brush, jumps into the bathtub and scrubs himself with the brush. When the dirt is washed off his body, everybody is surprised to see 'Harry'. He wags his tail happily and wants to have another bath!

'হ্যারি, দ্য ডার্টি ডগ' আমার প্রিয় বই। আমি এটা পড়তে ক্লান্ত হয় না. হ্যারি কালো দাগযুক্ত একটি সাদা কুকুর। গোসল করা ছাড়া সবকিছুই তার ভালো লাগে। তাই একদিন, সে তার গোসলের ব্রাশ পিছনের বাগানে লুকিয়ে রেখে বাড়ি থেকে পালিয়ে যায়। সে কাদায় খেলে নোংরা হয়ে যায়। সে কয়লার গর্তের কাছে যায় এবং তাতে গড়িয়ে পড়ে। সন্ধ্যায় সে ক্ষুধার্ত বলে বাড়ি ফেরে। তাকে কেউ চিনতে পারছে না। সে তাদের বোঝানোর চেষ্টা করে যে সে হ্যারি। নাচ, দুই পায়ে দাঁড়ানো, গড়িয়ে গড়িয়ে চলার মতো পুরনো সব কৌশল সে করে। কিন্তু তারপরও তাকে কেউ চিনতে পারছে না। তার খুব খারাপ লাগছে। হঠাৎ তার স্নানের ব্রাশের কথা মনে পড়ে। সে দৌড়ে পিছনের বাগানে যায়, স্নানের ব্রাশটি তুলে নেয়, বাথটাবে ঝাঁপ দেয় এবং ব্রাশ দিয়ে নিজেকে স্ক্রাব করে। তার গায়ের ময়লা ধুয়ে মুছে গেলে 'হ্যারি' দেখে সবাই অবাক। সে খুশিতে লেজ নাড়ায় আর আরেকটা গোসল করতে চায়!

A VISIT TO A ZOO

Last year, I went to Thiruvananthapuram during the Christmas holidays. My father took me to see the famous zoo there. An ape was the first animal I saw at the zoo. It jumped from bar to bar in a cage, and then came and stood in front of us. We gave it some monkey nuts. Then we saw the lions and tigers. They looked fierce. I was scared and held on to my father's hand tightly. We saw birds, all in cages, chirping and making a lot of noise. Some of them had bright, colourful feathers. We also saw elephants, giraffes, rhinos, hippos, spotted deer, snakes, bears, camels, rabbits, leopards and crocodiles. 1 spent three hours at the zoo and thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

গত বছর বড়দিনের ছুটিতে তিরুবনন্তপুরমে গিয়েছিলাম। আমার বাবা আমাকে সেখানকার বিখ্যাত চিড়িয়াখানা দেখতে নিয়ে গেলেন। একটি বনমানুষ ছিল প্রথম প্রাণী যা আমি চিড়িয়াখানায় দেখেছিলাম। এটি একটি খাঁচায় বার থেকে বারে লাফিয়ে উঠল, এবং তারপরে এসে আমাদের সামনে দাঁড়াল। আমরা কিছু বানর বাদাম দিয়েছি। তারপর সিংহ আর বাঘ দেখলাম। তারা হিংস্র লাগছিল। আমি ভয় পেয়ে বাবার হাত শক্ত করে ধরলাম। আমরা খাঁচায় থাকা পাখিগুলোকে দেখেছি, কিচিরমিচির করছে এবং অনেক শব্দ করছে। তাদের মধ্যে কিছু উজ্জ্বল, রঙিন পালক ছিল। আমরা হাতি, জিরাফ, গন্ডার, জলহস্তী, দাগযুক্ত হরিণ, সাপ, ভালুক, উট, খরগোশ, চিতাবাঘ এবং কুমিরও দেখেছি একটানা চিড়িয়াখানায় তিন ঘন্টা কাটিয়েছে এবং আমার পরিদর্শনটি পুরোপুরি উপভোগ করেছে।

MY CLASS TEACHER

Mr David is my class teacher. He is polite, charming and intelligent. He always comes neatly
and smartly dressed to school. Mr David is regular and punctual. He never takes leave. He is very strict with the children, but at the same time, he is a very kind person. If a child has not done his homework, he makes him do it during recess. He never beats anyone, but only scolds naughty children. We all greet
him as soon as he enters our class. He explains a thing over and over again if anyone has not understood it the first time. Mr David meets our parents every month and tells them of our progress in class. He is a favourite among all the children in the school. I feel proud that I am a student in his class.

মিঃ ডেভিড আমার ক্লাস টিচার। তিনি নম্র, কর্মনীয় এবং বুদ্ধিমান। তিনি সর্বদা সুন্দর এবং স্মার্ট পোশাক পরে স্কুলে আসেন। মিঃ ডেভিড নিয়মিত এবং সময়নিষ্ঠ তিনি কখনো ছুটি নেন না। তিনি শিশুদের সাথে খুব কঠোর, কিন্তু একই সময়ে, তিনি খুব দয়ালু ব্যক্তি। যদি একটি শিশু হোমওয়ার্ক না করে থাকে, তবে তিনি তাকে ছুটির সময় এটি করতে বাধ্য করেন। তিনি কখনও কাউকে মারেন না, তবে কেবল দুষ্টু বাচ্চাদের তিরস্কার করেন। আমরা সবাই সালাম জানাই সে আমাদের ক্লাসে প্রবেশ করার সাথে সাথেই। তিনি একটি জিনিস বারবার ব্যাখ্যা করেন যদি কেউ প্রথমবার না বুঝে থাকেন। মিঃ ডেভিড মাসিক আমাদের পিতামাতার সাথে দেখা করেন এবং তাদের ক্লাসে আমাদের অগ্রগতির কথা বলেন। স্কুলের সব ছেলেমেয়েদের মধ্যে সে খুব প্রিয়। আমি গর্বিত যে আমি তার ক্লাসের একজন ছাত্র।
