Life was not easy for an early 19th-century Bengali woman. She had to live with many restrictions. Most of them were deprived of school education and were married off at an early age. Their life used to be. monotonous and tiresome. They had to do the household activities all through the day. Their in-laws are often ill-treated them. Women did not have equal rights. Girls were not allowed to take non-vegetarian food or wear colorful dresses after their husbands' demise. Many of them suffered from anaemia and malnutrition and died at an early age while giving birth to children.

Freedom fighter 'Dadu (we called him so) used to live in our locality only a year ago. Although he was very old, his health was still considerably good and his ability was remarkable. We liked him a lot. He was very generous to us. He treated us like his own grandchildren, told us stories, and, sometimes even played with us. My father once told me that freedom fighter Dadu came from an affluent family. Yet, he believed in the inherent equality of man. Even after Independence, he worked extensively for the rights of the disadvantaged and fought against social injustice. He was indeed a true humanist. Dadu died last year. We still miss him a lot!
