'হ্যাঁ হ্যাঁ' তারা বলল। মা গল্পটা বলতে শুরু করলেন :
Long ago, everybody could touch the Sky. The Sky stretched like an umbrella over the Earth. He played with little children. They threw balls at him. He threw the balls back. The Sky and the children laughed together in happiness. The Sky was very close to the Earth.

In those days, there lived an old woman. She was the oldest woman in the village. She lived in a little mud hut. Her hut was beside a paddy field. There were coconut trees at a distance. She had very little work to do. She had nowhere to go. So all day long, she cleaned her hut. One hot summer day, there was dust everywhere. People were coughing and sneezing with the dust. Even the Sky coughed and sneezed. The old woman's hut was also covered with dust. She swept and swept the little hut. She swept the inside of her hut. She swept the outside of her hut. Dust rose all around her in brown clouds.
সেইসময়, সেখানে একজন বৃদ্ধা মহিলা বাস করতেন। তিনি ছিলেন গ্রামের সবচেয়ে বৃদ্ধা মহিলা। তিনি মাটির তৈরি একটি ছোট্ট কুটিরে বাস করতেন। তাঁর কুটিরটি ধানখেতের পাশেই ছিল। একটু দূরে ছিল নারকেল গাছগুলি। তাঁকে খুব কম কাজই করতে হত। তাঁর কোথাও যাওয়ার ছিল না। সারা দিন ধরে তিনি তাই তাঁর কুটির পরিষ্কার করতেন। প্রচণ্ড গরমের একটি দিন, সর্বত্র ধুলো ছড়িয়ে ছিল। জনগণ ধুলোতে কাশছিল ও হাঁচছিল। এমনকি আকাশটি কাশছিল ও হাঁচছিল। বৃদ্ধা মহিলার কুটিরটি ধুলোয় ঢাকা ছিল। তিনি ছোট্ট কুটিরটিতে ঝাঁট দিচ্ছেন তো দিচ্ছেনই। তিনি তাঁর কুটিরের ভিতরে ঝাঁট দিচ্ছেন। তিনি তাঁর কুটিরের বাইরেও ঝাঁট দিচ্ছেন। ধুলো বাদামি মেঘের মতো তাঁকে ঢোক দিচ্ছিল।
The Sky could not breathe easily. The dust got into his nose and made him sneeze. The sneeze shook the world with its loud sound. The sneeze of the Sky was thunder. People covered their heads and ran indoors in fear. But the old woman kept on sweeping with her broom. The dust from her broom got into the sky's eyes and made them water. The water fell as drops of rain. Raindrops fell on to the areas she had just swept.
আকাশ সহজেই শ্বাসপ্রশ্বাস নিতে পারছিল না। তার নাকের ভিতর ধুলো ঢুকছে আর হাঁচি হচ্ছিল। তার হাঁচির চোটে উঁচু শব্দের ফলে পৃথিবী কাঁপছিল। আকাশটির হাঁচি ছিল বাজ পড়া। জনগণ ভয়ে তাদের মাথা ঢেকে রেখেছিল আর দৌড়ে বাড়ির ভিতরে চলে গিয়েছিল। কিন্তু বৃদ্ধা মহিলা তাঁর লম্বা হাতলওয়ালা ঝাঁটাটি দিয়ে ঝাঁট দিয়েই চলছিল। তাঁর ঝাঁটার ধুলোগুলি আকাশের চোখে ঢুকে গিয়েছিল আর তার ফলে জলের সৃষ্টি হয়েছিল। ওই জল থেকেই বৃষ্টির ফোঁটা পড়ছিল। যেখানে সে এইমাত্র ঝাঁট দিয়ে গিয়েছিল সেখানে বৃষ্টির ফোঁটাগুলি পড়ছিল।

She picked up her broom, and started to sweep. She swept harder and harder. More and more dust flew up. The Sky jumped out of her way. He tried to avoid the dust "Please, stop sweeping," he pleaded. The old woman did not listen to his request. She kept on sweeping. She wanted to keep her hut clean. The Sky could take it no more. He sneezed and coughed. He thundered and rained. At last, the Sky flew up. He flew out of reach of the old woman's broom. The Sky never came down again. But the Sky is still a friend to little children. From a distance, he watches them play and smiles happily.
বৃদ্ধা মহিলা সক্রোধে আকাশের দিকে তাকালেন। ‘এখনই বৃষ্টি থামাও', তিনি আদেশ করলেন। আকাশ বৃষ্টি থামাতে পারল না। তার চোখগুলি ধুলোয় ভরে গিয়েছিল তাঁর ঝাঁট দেওয়ার জন্য। তিনি তাঁর ঝাঁটাটা তুলে নিলেন এবং ঝাঁট দিতে শুরু করলেন। তিনি অনমনীয় ভাবে ঝাঁট দিতে লাগলেন। আরও ধুলো উড়তে লাগল। আকাশ তাঁর পথ থেকে লাফ দিয়ে সরে দাঁড়াল। সে ধুলোকে এড়িয়ে চলতে চেষ্টা করছিল সে নিজপক্ষ সমর্থন করে অনুরোধ জানাল, 'অনুগ্রহ করে ঝাড় দেওয়া বন্ধ করুন।' বৃদ্ধা মহিলাটি তার অনুরোধ শুনলেন না। তিনি ঝাঁড় দিতেই থাকলেন। তিনি তাঁর কুটির পরিষ্কার রাখতে চাইছিলেন। আকাশ এটা সহ্য করতে পারছিল না। সে হাঁচছিল ও কাশছিল। বাজ পড়তে লাগল আর বৃষ্টি পড়তে লাগল। অবশেষে, আকাশ উড়ে চলে গেল। সে বৃদ্ধা মহিলাটির ঝাঁটার থেকে অনেক দূরে উড়ে গেল। আকাশ আর কখনো নীচে নেমে আসেনি । কিন্তু আকাশ এখনও ছোট্ট শিশুদের বন্ধু। একটু দূরত্বে, সে তাদের খেলাধুলা দেখছে আর আনন্দে হাসছে।
